In October of 2021 I was in a near death car crash, shattering two vertebrae in my spine.
When my life and my body were broken in half, I leaned on my unbreakable connection with my limitless spirit.
My spirit was with me during sleepless hospital nights, when the heaviest dose of morphine felt like a water gun on a house fire.
Knowing that there was something so much bigger than myself with me at all times gave me the faith to endure unthinkable pain and discomfort.
Spiritual teacher Mooji uses the metaphor of two birds to explain that we all have two parts: our human self and our spirit, or higher self.
The first bird is you as a human, busy building a life and an identity.
The second bird is your higher self witnessing the process.
Mooji describes the second bird, or your spirit, as: “The bird behind and above has no identity, it doesn’t need one. It’s not in business, it simply watches. It’s not judging, it simply watches. Yet from it comes great wisdom and insight.”1
We access sage wisdom when we step into the role of witness.
I became “the second bird” during my near death experience.
I left my body and watched from above, witnessing myself on the trauma table.
While I was out of body, being “the second bird”, I experienced a level of acceptance and peace that is hard to translate into words (but I’ll keep trying).
I experienced a divine understanding of death and a divine understanding of the power of accepting “what is”.
In April’s xo Spirit Circle, part of the paid membership here, I expanded on these teachings—it led us into an inspired discussion, leaving us all with new perspectives to integrate.
Some questions we contemplated together throughout our 2 hour call:
How can I find peace within while facing the uncertainty of life?
How can I accept what I’ve experienced in the past and move forward in life?
What is my body trying to tell me? How can I listen?
What is the role of doubt on our spiritual journey?
and so much more…
I also led a guided meditation to expand your awareness and connect with your true essence, or second bird, for clarity and wisdom from within.
I asked live participants to share what realizations they had during the call and here’s what two of them had to say:
Here is the replay of our call:
